Imagine if it hurt so much to walk that you could only take a few steps. Imagine if you were forced to walk on your ankles. Imagine if the weight of your own body fractured your leg. That WAS this poor burro's life.
As soon as Animal Guardian Network saved her, this formerly unwanted soul was named Belle which means "beautiful" in French. And she was truly one of the most beautiful, kindest, gentlest souls all the way down to the heart under her hoof.
Charlie Bear was picked up by the Yuma Humane Society and thought to be a stray. He was old with a broken leg and deemed unadoptable and therefore was going to be euthanized.
Not so fast! Animal Guardian Network stepped in to save this little nugget!
Charlie Bear has several severe medical issues which Animal Guardian Network is providing him with the right medications and care to keep him happy and comfortable. The world would have been dimmer had this sparkling little light been extinguis
Curly came to Animal Guardian Network in 2015 as a 3 month old Jersey calf. His owners fed him food scraps and garbage. He was taken from his mother way too early and never given any proper nutrition or clean water.
Curly was fed the proper food and nutritional supplements. He also started to receive hugs and kisses from everyone he met.
Curly grew to over 1500 pounds, living in a habitat consisting of an expansive barn and pasture for unlimited enrichment. Curly loved life!
Koda came to us as a surrender July, 2022.
He was grossly overweight with terrible inflammation & chronic diarrhea.
For 8 months we exhausted protocol after protocol, labs, and x-rays trying to figure out what was causing the diarrhea and inflammation. Koda’s results came back with results that explained everything. There were only 3 things on the list he WASN’T allergic to.
Today Koda’s weight, health and well-being are phenomenal. We are extremely diligent monitoring him everyday!
From slaughter to salvation.
That's Legend's story and the story of most of the horses and burros Animal Guardian Network has saved.
It is impossible to imagine these majestic and noble souls could be anything but cherished. Their eyes reveal the deepest understanding and wisdom.
Legend was 200lbs underweight when the sanctuary saved him, along with his bonded friend Shorty, in 2017. They now live everyday with plenty of delicious food, clean water, love and acres of land to frolic and play.
Phoenix was living chained up by a person who should have never owned her. Sadly, the owners dog was in the process of killing Phoenix when the man was able to intervene. Phoenix had half her leg ripped from her body, one of her ears ripped off and part of her tail. She suffered unimaginable trauma and received NO vet care.
When Animal Guardian Network was made aware of her situation they immediately took her in. She is now doing well and happily living with other goats and sheep.
Ransom, along with his bonded friend Victor, were taken in after their owners experienced life changing tragedy.
Both horses were much loved and truly well cared for. However, under unfortunate veterinary direction, Ransom and Victor's serious medical conditions were not accurately diagnosed.
Ransom (and Victor) have a long road ahead of him but Animal Guardian Network has a wonderful equine vet and their every need is being taken care of, along with lots of love!
Meet mini horse Star!
Can you believe someone dumped this soul in an alley in the middle of the night?
Star came to the sanctuary with a past of neglect and fear. Thankfully Star has been helped past many of these difficulties, with the help of talented horsewomen.
Star has made such progress, she will like be a future therapy animal, visiting hospice and assisted living residents.
This sweet little boy was dumped by his previous owners at the Yuma Animal Shelter because they were moving. Tex was severely overweight and had not received any medical care. Animal Guardian Network was contacted, agreed to accept him and a volunteer drove to Yuma and brought him to his forever home.
Tex was put on a healthy nutritional protocol, and finally received care for his heart and other medical conditions. Tex had the BIGGEST personality. He loved to get and give kisses and cuddles.
It's hard to imagine now that this burro was not expected to live. As a three week old baby he was in the process of dying while in transport to the hospital.
Once he arrived the vets gave him a grave prognosis and prepared Animal Guardian Network that he would likely not survive. He was so fragile, stolen from his mom and being fed cow replacer milk.
Now he's strong, healthy, is a ring leader in burro canyon and full of mischief and sass!
Cowboy along with Hank and Archie came to AGN when asked by a defunct rescue if we could provide sanctuary to these 3 bonded goat buddies. It is often assumed that animals do not grieve loss and can just learn to adapt if a bond is severed. Protecting bonds such as this is something we are very passionate about.
Cowboy and his 2 friends are the most gentle of souls. Each has a wonderful and soothing energy about them.
Ivy was one of 2 surviving piglets from a litter of 6. Thirty-one pigs were abandoned in the back yard of a vacant home. All 31 were seized and transferred to a sanctuary that found homes or kept all the pigs. Little Ivy was very fragile but with round the clock care in now thriving.
Many guardian angels played a big part in helping Ivy become socialized and learn to accept love. Animal Guardian Network is honored to carry on all of their hard work and help Ivy grow into a beloved resident!
LeKota was a skeleton hidden under a glitzy saddle as he was paraded around an auction ring. The auctioneer bellowed on about his beautiful markings to entice buyers to open their checkbooks. What he didn’t speak about was the starved body being camouflaged under that flashy saddle.
Animal Guardian Network saw through the saddle and saw the beautiful animal underneath. LeKota now makes his home in the equine herd. LeKota will never again be without food, love or proper care.
Pepe was a 14 year old lost soul who was taken to the county kill shelter because he was drinking excessively which caused him to urinate frequently.
Animal Guardian Network began treatment for his untreated Diabetes and other serious issues.
Pepe thrived at Animal Guardian Network and became a spokes-pup, appearing on the cover of a magazine and being the ring bearer at a wedding held at the ranch. Pepe was a most special boy.
Spirit paved the way for all the equine and farm residents that have found sanctuary and salvation at Animal Guardian Network.
When Spirit arrived she was 200 pounds underweight, had uncared for teeth and chronic eye issues. She had no faith or trust in humans. After many months of medical and emotional care and rehabilitation, Spirit finally felt safe and at home. Sprit lived out her senior years at Animal Guardian Network with the best quality of life.
Meet Wilson, one of the newest residents at Animal Guardian Network!
This tiny 5 pound crumpled up old man was left on the streets to fend for himself. He was picked up by the Yuma shelter to sit and wait for a miracle.
He has a critical amount of muscle wasting and is very neurological in his spine rendering his back legs only 20% functional.
Be it 5 minutes, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months or years, little Wilson's life matters and he can count Animal Guardian Network as his forever home.
You may have read about the senior bull that lived peacefully his whole life with the Salt River wild horses, until he was captured and sent to a livestock auction.
The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group thought why not try to give an old bull a chance for a better life so they set up a fundraiser to cover his auction and transport costs.
Salty's new life at Animal Guardian Network is in a setting reminiscent of the only life he had ever known but one that would never be taken from him again
Verde along with her baby Apache were liberated from an auction pen and were transported to an equine hospital. Both of them were being treated for pneumonia. Sadly, her baby passed away.
Animal Guardian Network kept their promise to Verde. Once she was well enough to travel, she joined the burro herd. Shortly thereafter, Verde's motherly instincts were reignited when a baby burro, Hondo, came along. Verde nurtured Hondo and Hondo nurtured Verde.
Pearl was abused and neglected. This almost indistinguishable old, partially blind soul is actually an Arabian horse.
Once her situation was brought to Animal Guardian Network's attention, they immediately said yes, let's bring her to Healing River Ranch. Despite her past torment at the hands of humans she is the friendliest girl.
Pearl passed away from cancer after only being "home" for 18 months. However she had love, comfort and care everyday. We love and miss you Pearl.
Ferdinand was sought after by people who only wanted his head and horns.
From December 2019 until his passing in February 2023, Ferdinand lived at Animal Guardian Network with his friend Curly, many goats and sheep and two guardian dogs in a wonderful 14,000 square foot habitat.
He enjoyed a life filled with joy and comfort. He especially loved the summer when watermelons are in season as they were his FAVORITE treat. He also loved to watch the butterflies. What a gentle giant he was.
Dodge's sad story is all to common in the equine world. Dodge was a senior mule that was working on a Tennessee farm. After the owner worked him to the bone, never taking care of his health, he was being sent to slaughter as he was no longer of "use" to the farmer.
Animal Guardian Network was able to intervene, bought Dodge from the owner, and arranged for his 1800 mile transport to Arizona.
Dodge was a sweet and sensitive soul.
Say hello to sweet 19 year old Java!
Java was surrendered because the new husband felt she was lazy, incontinent, and a picky eater. Java was none of those things.
Java was so special. She took each new resident that arrived under her paw. She personified patience and kindness even when her charges aren’t appreciative of her over love.
What a true treasure she was!
Milagro (miracle) was struck by a vehicle. Officers on scene chose not to destroy him. Instead, they called someone who in turn brought him to Animal Guardian Network. It was only after a medical exam did we learn about the extent of Milagro’s injuries which included having a bullet lodged in his head! Someone intentionally tried to kill Milagro.
Never again. Animal Guardian Network is taking every measure to heal him physically and emotionally.
Meet Notch. This sweet senior’s body sure tells a story of the overuse many pack mules endure.
Notch is in his early twenties and suffers from arthritis, ringbone, side bone and hoof related deficiencies. His family had to relocate and were unable to provide proper care. Animal Guardian Network offered Notch lifelong sanctuary care.
Notch loves LOVE! He loves bear hugs around his neck and sweet kisses on those lips (beware his whiskers tickle!).
Molly Bear is the reason Animal Guardian Network at Healing River Ranch is what it is today. Everything done is in her honor. Molly was left on the side of the road. She was unable to walk and barely alive. Molly had a 1% chance of surviving her horrendous neglect and starvation.
Then one day, she was standing. Then she was walking.
Molly was grace, she was hope, she was inspiration, she was resilience, she was forgiveness, she was unconditional love, she was perfection.
Solo arrived at Animal Guardian Network in 2017 from another sanctuary. Solo was originally rescued when he was very young. He had been thrown from a truck shattering his back leg which ultimately had to be amputated.
Solo lived with Opal the turkey who lost all of her flock mates and needed a friend. They formed the most beautiful and accepting friendship. Solo was an old soul who brought comfort to all he met. He was the embodiment of love and kindness. Solo was warmth..he was sunshine.
